Culture is constantly being created and shaped by all of us. Every individual contributes to this ongoing process - including barber and anthropologist Rayn Ramkishun and photographer and director Patrick Kenawy. Together, they present Fades, a unique exhibition that is also a fully operational barbershop.
Through photography, text, short film and a operational barbershop and photography studio, Fades highlights the artistry of the "fade" haircut while also exploring the deeper cultural narratives behind it - stories, traditions, and identities that shape this craft.
Starting Friday, March 14, the Van Eesteren Museum will temporarily transform into a barbershop to host this special exhibition. The opening evening will begin at 18:30 and continue until late, with Deputy Mayor Sofyan Mbarki officially launching Fades by being the first to receive a haircut. The exhibition runs from March 14 to 23 - If you can't make it to the opening, you can still visit the exhibition on the following days afterwards. This exhibition has been made possible thanks to Gemeente Amsterdam.

How do different generations of Egyptians in the Netherlands experience their identity? What connects them, and where do the differences lie? In the short documentary Masr, Patrick Tarek Kenawy and Selma Abdelatif explore the stories of Egyptian-Dutch individuals, with family, upbringing, cuisine, and a love for the motherland playing a central role.
How is being Egyptian experienced in the Netherlands? What role do memories and traditions play? And how can shared stories contribute to mutual understanding and connection? In 2024 and 2025, Masr will be screened at various locations in The Netherlands.
